Each year, Peugeot stuns the crowds at the Paris motor show with a magnificent concept car. Sadly, those concept cars rarely make it to production just like the SR1 Spyder Concept. The Onyx Hybrid Concept car is just one of those.
Power comes from a mid-mounted 3.7-Liter turbocharged diesel V8 developing 600 Hp coming from Peugeot's motorsport division and a battery based system slightly similar to F1's KERS (kinetic energy recovery system) dubbed Hybrid4. The system allows the driver to have an additional 80 Hp under acceleration.
More after the jump..
But the real innovation lies in the materials used on both the interior and the body of the car. The car makes extensive use of nano-materials among which we can find carbon fiber of course, but also wool, foam, felt and other light materials. The use of such materials allowed the french automaker to achieve a weight of only 1,100 Kilograms (2,425 pounds) with the a carbon monocoque alone weighing less than 100 Kg (220 pounds).
Don't get too excited though, Peugeot says that the concept car came to showcase its design team capabilities and possible design evolutions for their future cars. So a mid-engined V8 powered hybrid supercar from the French automaker is out of question. At least for the time being..
